 Newer Mac users likely run into the problem of how to take screenshots on a Mac pretty early on. Taking screenshots in Windows versus on Mac is a little bit different. Plus, macOS doesn’t put the screenshot in the same spot as Windows does. So, it’s a new system to learn. Here’s how to take screenshots on a Mac and where to find those screenshots after you take them. On the toolbar, select from the screenshot or screen record options. Once done, the screenshot or recording should appear on your desktop after a few seconds. However, macOS has a screenshot tool that lets you do things with more granularity, and it’s the method we recommend using. We’ll describe how to do that below. Press Command+Shift+5 to open the screenshot toolbar. The toolbar has six options on it. From left to right, they are Capture Entire Screen, Capture Selected Window, Capture Selected Portion, Record Entire Screen, Record Selected Window, and Options. Click on the option you want and, if it’s a selected window or portion option, select the window or portion you want to screenshot or record. Once done, the screenshot will appear in the bottom right corner, — if you don’t touch it, it will eventually save to your desktop. More advanced screenshot and screen recording tools Joe Hindy / Android Authority Now that you know the basics, let’s briefly go over what each option from the prior tutorial actually does and how each one works. Capture Entire Screen — As it states, it’ll capture the entire screen. To use it, click the button on the toolbar and then click the Capture button to engage. Capture Selected Window — This option only takes a screen capture of the window you select. To use it, tap the button and then the window you want to screenshot. It should automatically take the screenshot once you select the window. Capture Selected Portion — This option creates a resizable box. Simply resize the box as needed and click the Capture button to take a screenshot. Record Entire Screen — This records your entire screen. Tap the Record button to start a recording. The stop button is in the upper right corner on your taskbar. Click it when you’re done recording. Record Selected Portion — This option creates a resizable box just like the screenshot version. When you hit Record, it’ll only record stuff inside of the resizable box. The stop recording button is in the same spot as it is for recording the whole screen. Options — Options is your settings menu. The settings give you the option to change where screenshots and recordings are saved. In addition, there’s a timer function, a microphone function if you have a mic, and some other smaller features. You should now have all of the knowledge you need to take screenshots or screen recordings on your Mac. Where to find screenshots and screen recordings on macOS Joe Hindy / Android Authority Screenshots and screen recordings save to your desktop by default. However, you can change where your screenshots save. Open the screenshot tool by pressing Command+Shift+5. Click the Options button to open a little menu. You can find the save location options at the top of the little menu. The menu lets you save to Desktop, Documents, Mail, Messages, and QuickTime Player by default. Click one of those if you want to save your screenshots there. If you click the last option, Other Location, a Finder window opens up. Select the folder you want to use, and click the Choose button. Now, your screenshots and screen recordings will save where you specified. Tips, tricks, and other useful shortcuts Luckily, Apple kept things simple with screenshots and screen recordings. Most of the options are labeled clearly and are easy to find. However, there are some tips and tricks we think you’ll find useful. Tips and tricks Joe Hindy / Android Authority You can hit ESC to leave the screenshot toolbar menu at any point. It’s easier than hitting the little x button. Once you finish a recording or screenshot, a preview appears in the bottom right. Right-click (or double-click on a Macbook) to bring up more options. You can select new save locations, delete the screenshot or recording immediately, and even edit the screenshot by clicking Markup. You can also click and drag the bottom-right preview directly into an app window to save it or share it there. As a consequence, it won’t save in your default location. So, for example, if you take a screenshot and drag the preview into your Pictures folder, it will no longer save on your desktop. Screenshots save natively as PNG files. You can change it to JPG by opening a Terminal window, and typing defaults write com.apple.screencapture type JPG, then hitting return (enter). Some third-party apps, such as CleanShot X, Skitch, Snagit, Shottr, Lightshot, and Monosnap can add additional utility if you need even more hardcore screenshots. You can take a screenshot without your keyboard. Open Finder, tap the Go option at the top of the screen, and select Applications. Open the Utilities folder, and finally, open the Screenshot function. From there, it’s the same toolbar you get when you press Command+Shift+5. Command+Shift+3 — Takes a screenshot of the entire screen. Command+Shift+4 — Turns your mouse into a crosshair. Click and drag to create a box. While holding the click, you can also click and hold the spacebar to move the box horizontally or vertically. Releasing the click takes a screenshot of whatever is in the box. Hit the ESC key to cancel the screenshot. Command+Shift+4+Spacebar — This lets you capture a screenshot of a specific window. Your mouse icon will turn into a camera icon, and the thing you’re screenshotting will glow blue. Click the mouse button to capture a screenshot. Command+Shift+6 — Take a screenshot of the Touch Bar. This one is only available on Macbooks with the Touch Bar, obviously. Command+Shift+Control+3 — This saves the screenshot to your clipboard where you can paste it anywhere where you can paste an image. However, Apple hardware can be broken into two categories—devices without a home button, and devices with a home button. Within these categories, there is no difference between iOS and iPadOS. Once you've taken a screenshot, tap Done in the top left corner of your screen to save your screenshot. Screenshots will be saved to your Camera Roll, in the Screenshots folder. How to take a screenshot on an iPhone or iPad without a home button Devices without a home button include the iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone13. With the exception of the entry-level iPad, current-generation iPads do not have a home button either. If you own an iPhone or iPad model without a home button, press the side button and the volume up button at the same time to take a screenshot. How to take a screenshot on an iPhone or iPad with a home button The iPhone SE and older iPhones with a home button will need to use this method. How to take a screenshot on Windows 10 and Windows 11 There were two different ways to take a screenshot on Windows 10: the Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch. Microsoft combined these applications into Snipping Tool on Windows 11. Both operating systems now use Snipping Tool. Snipping Tool allows you to take a screenshot of your whole screen, a single window, a rectangular selection, or a free-form area. You can also set a delay timer for 3, 5, or 10 seconds. Screenshots will be saved to your Downloads folder as a JPG file with the name "Screenshot [date] [time]". There are two ways to open Snipping Tool. You can either open it with the keyboard shortcut or by searching in your taskbar. The keyboard shortcut opens a simplified version that doesn't include a delay feature or an options menu. Press Windows Key + Shift + S or search for the app to open Snipping Tool. Select your screenshot preference. Rectangle — Capture a custom, rectangle-shaped area. Free-form — Capture a custom area of any shape. Window — Capture a single window. Full-screen — Capture everything on your screen. How to take a screenshot with the Windows Print Screen button If you have a print screen button, you can also use the following shortcuts to take a screenshot. Note that tapping print screenshot will not save a copy of the screenshot to your desktop. Instead, it will be copied into your clipboard, which can then be pasted with Ctrl+V into an editor like Paint. Print Screen - Immediately take a screenshot of your entire screen. This may open Snipping Tool instead depending on your computer's key bindings. Alt + Print Screen - Capture the active window. Shift + Print Screen - Capture part of the screen. Pressing this shortcut will prompt you to select a rectangular area to capture. After taking a screenshot, you can click the preview in the bottom right of your screen. Here you make light edits, share the screenshot, choose a save location, or open it with a photo editing app. You can also open the Photos app to edit and view past screenshots. How to take a screenshot and record your screen with the Windows Game Bar Pressing the Windows key + G opens the Windows Game Bar. This includes a number of additional screenshot features like screen recording. All these features can be used without Game Bar open, however you may need to enable them within Game Bar first. Click the Camera button to take a screenshot. Click Record last 30 seconds to capture the last 30 seconds of your screen. This can also be triggered by pressing the Windows key + Alt + G. Click the Start Recording button to record your screen. This will create a small window that is visible outside the Game Bar. Simply click the Stop button to stop your recording. How to take a screenshot on ChromeOS Chromebooks will allow you to screenshot the full screen, a window, or a custom selection. If you are using a keyboard that doesn't have a Show windows key, you can use Ctrl + F5 to take a full screenshot, or Ctrl + Shift + F5 to capture a custom rectangular selection. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. Select Screenshot from the menu. Select a screenshot option. Click (and drag depending on your choice) on the screen to take your screenshot. How to record your Chromebook's screen Chromebooks allow you to record the full screen, a partial screen, or a window. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. Click Screen record from the menu. Select a recording option. Click Stop recording in the bottom right of your screen to end the recording. If you're using your Chromebook in tablet mode, press the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time to take a screenshot. How to take a screenshot in the Google Chrome web browser As a Chromebook user, you'll be using Chrome a lot. There are plenty of screenshot extensions available, that offer significantly better functionality than the Chromebook's screen capture tool. How to take a screenshot on Linux Depending on which Linux OS you are using, you may have access to a dedicated screenshot app. However, if not, the same keyboard shortcuts as Windows should still work as long as you have a print screen key. Print Screen - Take a screenshot of your entire screen. Alt + Print Screen - Capture the active window. Shift + Print Screen - Capture part of the screen. How to record your screen on Linux Just like taking a screenshot, recording capability depends on your OS version (e.g. Ubuntu users can press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R) to start recording their screen. If not, try a third-party recorder instead. How to take a screenshot on a Galaxy Watch To take a screenshot with your Galaxy Watch, swipe the screen to the right while pressing the Home button. It will save your screenshots to the Gallery app. You can also take a screenshot by pressing both the Home and Back buttons simultaneously. Take care not to hold the buttons for too long, as this will activate Samsung Pay instead. How to take a screenshot on an Apple Watch (WatchOS) Before you get started with taking screenshots, you'll need to enable it first. Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch. Tap General.
